The Reading Wheels program prepares and motivates children to read by delivering programming, free books, activities and literacy resources to the children and families that we serve and who need them most. Reading Wheels meets on the second Saturday of every month at 42nd Elementary School in Los Angeles.
During Reading Wheels, students and volunteers take time reading aloud and participating in related activities with each other. Reading Wheels combine three essential elements to foster children's literacy: reading motivation, family and community involvement, and the excitement of choosing free books to keep.
Reading Wheels accomplishments are due in part to the generous support of the Reading is Fundamental (RIF), FirstBook, corporations, foundations, community organizations, and thousands of individuals.
GOALS
The goals of Reading Wheels are to:
To promote improved reading and learning skills in elementary school children:
This goal will help lead to a more successful future for the children who participate.
To furnish children with books for their homes:
Children have the opportunity to choose and keep twelve to fifteen books per year at no cost to the children or their families.
To provide enriching and rewarding volunteering opportunities:
Reading Wheels provides enriching and rewarding volunteer opportunities to community members who may have limited time to give, but who sincerely wish to give to the community and touch the lives of others. The monthly reading sessions do not require a major commitment--volunteers can choose to volunteer at a reading sessions whenever their schedules permit.
To bring Reading Wheels program to other elementary schools:
Foundation for Second Chances is working to bring the successful Reading Wheels program to other elementary schools in South Los Angeles. The program continues to succeed because of the generous support of Reading is Fundamental (RIF), FirstBook, foundations, corporations, schools, educators, and individuals and because of the overwhelming enthusiasm of the participating parents, children, teachers, and volunteers.
